After such a good run for the last four months, it may be, it’s not surprising that the wheels at last fell off Letchworths chariot. There was parity with the hosts until about the 50th minute and the last half hour certainly belonged to Shelford just as at Letchworth, the same thing happened in reverse. Never mind, the Davey field, home to the hosts, this was more the Potters field for Letchworth who uncharacteristically leaked five tries in the last third of the game. It was certainly revenge for October's clash and no complaint from Basra and his coaching team. As he said "Put it behind us and move on!!". However a review of the video should prove interesting next week. Llewelyn Jones was singled out as man of the match for another outstanding display, and mention should be made of Andy Young up from the second team who had a good half and young Sam Valpy who took on the scrum half duties for the last period.
Playing with a strong breeze Letchworth certainly dominated for the first forty. Legends took an early lead with a Sharp kick from a scrum penalty and then from a lineout close on the Shelford line Tom Lewis drove on, and hooker Tim Hughes was on hand to touch down. Shelford had a good spell and a quick blindside move saw centre Tom James go over. Charlie Parkhouse then put in a mazy run but was brought down just short of the line. Another good blindside move saw Shelford score another try to make it level as the kick was missed.
Then just before the interval Letchworth moved up the pitch and when in range Sharp dropped a goal to put the North Herts side 13/10 ahead at the break. Shelford statement of intent was clearly see out after the break and to the delight of the large agricultural crowd they completely dominated the game. They tied the scores with a penalty and after that Legends could not escape from their own 22, let alone their half, and the white wash was to be untroubled for the home side for the next 40 minutes! Firstly their elusive winger ghosted through and then followed a series of scores that the Letchworth defence would prefer to forget. At no side it was a healthy 46/13 for Shelford and one for the visiting faithful to head for the bar or car and congratulate their hosts for a fine day out and a worthy victory.
