This was a fixture that last season ended with a points difference of over 50 points in favour of the hosts. This season points were shared on a day when, to a man, everyone in both sides could not believe Letchworth had not won by a 20 point margin.
Not for the first time this season our scrum, marshalled by Captain Buchanan, who had another strong game in the tight and the loose that drew comparisons to the legend that is Oscar Robinson, pushed the opposition back metres at a time again and again. Unfortunately we had trouble controlling the ball as it rocketed out of the scrum and did not make the most of this.
Behind the scrum Sandy Sisley, playing at fly half for only the second time, had another strong game and shared man of the match with the scoring machine that is Fred Rooney.
At times our back play was a joy to see with the desired “edge” being found and the ball flowing through the well rehearsed patterns but these times were, sadly, far from frequent. Whilst our forwards set up and followed patterns well for the whole game a number of individual basic errors interrupted our flow of play and led to possession being lost. This was a day when both wingers saw more action in defence than attack.
Will Rooney, making his 2s debut at full back, had a commanding game and was always secure under the often kicked high ball and joined his twin Fred on the scoresheet for the second of our two tries.
Overall a performance that showed how far we have come when we play to our patterns but also frustrating that we should have one handsomely. The team all said they are looking to the rematch to make up for it.
Still undefeated in the league and still top. We go again in two weeks.
