Another Win on the road as Legends beat ONs in Another Mud Bath. By Ian Kite
Old Northamptonians 8 v 29 Letchworth Legends
A grim start in the worsening weather, mud and an unpredictable bounce deceiving most, this game trundled from scrum to lineout and back to scrum. An exchange of penalties in the first quarter and a morass of knock ons kept the scoring of tries in check until Asiedu from a quick tap powered in then Trimble almost from the re-start carried for forty metres, dummied to Asiedu and slid over for number two .
ONS were held up then forced a lineout maul. It was a well deserved score but it was to be their last. Legends worked their rolling maul, pressing ONs line dragging in the defence. Howman fed long to Sharp, the backs handling made the space for Tim Hughes, loitering on the wing, to score.
From the restart Legends ran, Titherington and Streets set Trimble on his way. He should have used Asiedu but he dummied and was brought down 5m short. Clean rucked ball was fumbled in midfield and the referee signalled the half.
ONS started the third quarter with determination, their backs working an inside move to their speedy winger who passed forward as Trimble put in a last ditch tackle. Trimble stopped another break close to and Johal, on for Asiedu, made a third try saving tackle. He also cleared up a grubber which had plenty of support behind it. ONS will be very disappointed to have not made more of these opportunities.
To secure the bonus point Legends used the lineout maul. Tim Hughes making the touch down, Sharp having set them up. He had a fine kicking game from hand and almost put Henderson and then Johal in with raking cross field punts. He converted three from four and made a penalty.
Elsewhere, Oundle took the plaudits at home to Sudbury and are unassailable at the top of the league. But Letchworth host them for the penultimate match of the season and will look to break their unbeaten record.
Next week Letchworth travel to Sudbury and then welcome Hertford on the 1st March. A game which has become something of a derby. Letchworth, having won the last three anticipate Hertford will attend Legends’ Lane in force. The Hertford supporters will expect great things from their young Hertford side which beat Tring 20 v 7 last time out.
