A&C drove hard from kick off down the slope into the Eagles End and played some expansive rugby their prop Morphy delighting the sparse crowd with his powerful running, players sliding off the tackle in the mud. However, their ambitions to gain five points from the postponed match were not to be, and they failed to reduce Harpenden's lead over them with this game in hand. They are to play both Harpenden and Bedford Athletic which are must win games if they are to stay up.
After a splendidly hearty lunch those who were not at internationals huddled on the balcony and pitch side to watch two sides battle it out in the sludge until indistinguishable. Letchworth had the most of play but A&C's resilience kept them out until Mongston crossed the line. Titherington had another spirited game, putting in his tackles and scoring twice from distance. Henderson, now recovered from his injury ran powerfully and not only set up field position but also scored two himself.
A&C scored two of their own and kicked two penalties and were in the game until the fourth quarter by which time Asiedu and the ever excellent Lewis had put the home side clear.
Only wingers and substitutes were recognisable in the second half. The pitch a quagmire. It will have time to recover as the next home fixture is not until 1st March when Legends' host Hertford.
At Letchworth the aim this season was to score ten more and conceding ten fewer points would bring promotion, Legends have done their part but have been undone by the excellence of Oundle. Let’s hope they fare better than Colchester who are rooted at the bottom of National League 2 with one win and just 17 points. Letchworth probably have another three years of development until their excellent Letchworth Colts Academy brings in a rush of home grown players but their ambition to play at level 4 remains undiminished.
