And so the Legends juggernaut rolls on into 2026 with a fine second half display, beating their lowly opponents by five tries to two with some excellent conversions by skipper Josh Sharp along the way. At this stage of the season they have scored 87 tries, 35 of which have come from the Parkhouse Brothers! Interestingly enough at this stage last season we had scored 88 tries, so there are the statistics for you!
More importantly, they are hard on the heels of leaders Colchester, who still remain unbeaten despite a few wobbles. The Essex side lead by six points with a healthy points for record, but Letchworth have them at home on March 7, which should be a key fixture for the season. Anyhow, enough of the overview and on to the game in hand!
The game was preceded by a minutes silence to honour the life of Zahid Nazir, or Naz as he was known by everyone at the club, a fine fly half and full back in the 80s. His cultured boot was reminiscent of Alan Jones and our present day captain. So, in other words, a very good player!
Despite their lowly position, Amersham provided stiff opposition for a good part of the game. Certainly in the first half, they had several chances to score out wide with several young and nippy players to the fore. Letchworth too had their opportunities but either passes didn’t go to hand and several opportunities were missed. All in all the first half was a bit frustrating and flat for both sides.
Legends were bossing the scrum and from one of these full back Max Trimble burst through on the blind. He found giant winger Kwaku who in turn passed back to the full back to open the scoring. Sharps conversion struck the uprights. Charlie Parkhouse made a good break after swift hands by the back division but was brought down at the last. He then nearly charged down a kick on the try line but the ball squirted over the dead ball area.
Although Letchworth received five scrum penalties in the first half the score remained at 5/0 till the break, with Amersham very much in the hunt.
The Buckinghamshire side came out for the second half determined to take something from this game and for the first five minutes they were well ensconced into the Letchworth 22. However, unfortunately for them it was not to be as Legends then went through a 20 minute purple period which was to put them out of sight.
Coach Baz Basra then decided to empty the bench and bring on all three sets of fresh legs, which certainly had an effect. McGown with a try, Arun Johal back to form and Liam Fitts fizzing round the pitch and putting in a shift with forward of the match Adam Green, whose work rate was phenomenal.
Full back Max Trimble had a great 10 minutes, firstly bursting through the Amersham defence and feeding Josh Sharp, who slowed down to put Kwacu back in at the corner with a fine conversion to follow (12-0). Then the on fire full back Trimble opened his legs to speed through and fed Josh Parkhouse to go over for another try. Only minutes later another break saw him through for a score himself but it looked like a hamstring pull slowed him up and Frazer McGown was on hand to dive over and score the vital bonus try and make it 24/nil at this stage.
Although the game was gone Amersham came back and scored a good try through Jarvis out wide and nearly went over from a cross kick.
However, minutes later, Charlie Parkhouse broke again and from the ensuing phases Josh Sharp wriggled through to go in under the post and then convert his own try to make it 31-5. Late on a penalty to the corner saw Amersham score the final points but there was no bonus point for the beleaguered visitors, who looked far better than the scoreline suggested. Next week Legends have a break until the 31st with an away game against improving Shelford.
The 1924s were also at home against Chess Valley and despite leading for most of the game were just pipped at the end in an exciting match which many thought they should have won. They face Luton at home for a vital game next Saturday, kickoff at 3 o’clock.
