Letchworth Garden City RFC

38 - 26

(HT 31-5)

Medway RFC

So another double achieved over a struggling Medway who nearly reeled in Legends’ lead in the second half. On a day when the team celebrated local lads Arun Johal, 100 caps, and Charlie Parkhouse, 50, and the club remembered the life of former legend Paul Freeman, a fine first team player and character in the 70s and 80s, both sides served up an entertaining contest.

The first quarter was totally frenetic. Josh Walker soared to take the kick-off and fed Aviss, who released his backs. A penalty to the corner from Josh Sharp and from the lineout the home side were over, with Liam Fitts emerging with the ball, and Sharp’s conversion added the two. Next it was the backs, with Kwaku making a telling break and several phases later Charlie Parkhouse celebrated his cap milestone with a fine try.

Medway hit back with a deserved score after an earlier try had been disallowed. Then, ten minutes later, an outrageous dummy from skipper Sharp saw him under the posts and Tim Hughes grabbed another from a close-range rolling maul for the bonus point.

Shortly after the break a loose Medway pass allowed Sharp to intercept and score, taking the score to 33-5, and Letchworth seemed over the hills and far away.

However, it was now Medway’s turn to dominate, with their lively backs scoring two and the forwards one to bring things to 33-26.

Squeaky bum time indeed, but this was the wake-up call Legends needed and with the final move of the game Tim Hughes grabbed his second. Another good win but again the habit of nearly losing a substantial lead could be very dicey against stronger opposition and Colchester’s narrow away victory at Tring meant no change in the table, with Letchworth trailing by six points. Next week is free before a trip to the seaside at Westcliff and then a vital home fixture with Colchester. Lunch is fast selling out and all potential diners should contact Les on 07827373937. The 1924s suffered a heavy defeat away to Datchworth which, given the lack of practice in recent weeks, was not a total surprise.
