Letchworth Garden City RFC
Fullerians RFC

It has often been said that defence wins matches and so this was the case as the Letchworth defence in the first 20 minutes was magnificent against these league promotion contenders. Dave Hynard and his coaches will be a lot happier than Eddie Jones after this Letchworth victory.

The Watford side threw everything at their hosts but to a man the Legends would not buckle and kept them at bay until at last a great break out saw man of the match Tatinda Gurere storm the length of the pitch  to go over for a five pointer.  This seemed to turn the game somewhat as now possession and territory were far more evenly distributed and meant that Legends secured an important bonus point win in front of a large home crowd in the Autumn sunshine.

However Fullers were soon back in it with a penalty and then missed another before the dynamic Gurere struck again. Fullers scored a try just before half time to make it 10 /8, but a great charge down by the other winger Kitson prevented the extra points thus giving Legends a narrow lead with slope and wind at their backs for the second half.

Whilst the astute punters money might have been on the recently relegated London 1 side Letchworth’s superb second half performance sent out a warning to other sides in this league.  After good early pressure Josh Davies slotted a penalty but then loose tackling in the centres allowed the visitors through for a soft try to tie the scores.

Things did not look too good when Lewis Jones received a yellow for a punch. However Legends retained their shape and a long penalty went agonisingly close. Then from a great cross field pass full back Jordan Davies cut through to go over for a seven pointer. Fullers strove to recover the situation but Letchworth held firm then in the last minute of the game Kitson cut through five despairing tackles for a great individual try. However this was a great TEAM victory from Barry Mellor, the replacement prop who came out of retirement to play, through Harry Charlier and Shaun Flatman in the lineout, an impressive fly half debut by Aman Johal and good match management by both Lewis Waters and latterly Harvey Howman at scrum half.  Legends can now travel to Chiswick next week with confidence.

The Wanderers had a great win 32/7 over Southgate whilst the seconds had no game.
