After cup elation last week it was league deflation this Saturday at the hands of a confident and passionate Hammersmith & Fulham side that made far fewer errors than their visitors and at the end of the day emerged as worthy winners.
As too often this season the parts were nearly all assembled for a free running machine but inevitably the cogs got jammed and frustration set in. At one stage at 15/12 it looked like Letchworth could tie the scores with a penalty but it drifted wide and with it the game as two late converted scores gave a somewhat lopsided final score.
The home side went ahead with an early penalty and then a seven pointer under the posts to lead 10/0 after twenty five minutes. Eventually Letchworth strung some moves together with the two Johal backs prominent. Young Aman came close but was denied by the full back. Letchworth had several attacking scrums when the game was held up as the Letchworth physio had to minister to the referee who received the ball full tilt in a delicate area much to the amusement of players and spectators alike.
Then after the Hammersmith & Fulham prop received a yellow for a high tackle the ball was worked to cousin Arun Johal who crossed the whitewash to pull back a score converted by Kieron Davies. At half time the score remained at 10/7 with the away side well in contention.
However from the restart a ghastly error let the flying Hammersmith & Fulham winger in at the corner for an unconverted try.
Legends tried hard to string some concerted moves together but were frustrated by either dropping the ball or the referees whistle. However at last one move did come together and after a 70 metre passage of play burly second rower Johnny Brain fed winger Jack Anthony who went over for an unconverted score . As mentioned before a Letchworth penalty could have tied matters but instead Hammersmith & Fulham capitalised on the visitors errors to run in two late converted scores and leave the visitors empty handed.
Some Spirit of the Samurai variety will be required when top of the Table London Welsh come calling next weekend. There is a league lunch which is filling fast complete with the first outing of the Letchworth Welsh male voice choir led by former skipper Richie Davies. Anyone wishing to attend please call BRIAN BURKE on 07768274037 before you grow much older.
The third team under Toad Kearn’s generalship had an entertaining game against Hendon 2s but went down 20/5 as the north London side like their west London counterparts jelled just that bit better than Legends.
