Fullerians RFC

30 - 6

(HT 0-0)

Letchworth Garden City RFC

It was back down to earth with a bump after the cup euphoria of last weekend as Legends faced a well disciplined and determined Fullers side who gave no quarter and comprehensively beat then in most aspects of the game.

The cloying pitch did not suit Letchworth’s nimble backs who found themselves bottled up by their opponents who lived vicariously offside but got away with it. The lineout was poor and far too many balls were coughed up to a grateful home side who looked after their own possession much more carefully.  Fullers were also physically more aggressive, sometimes not always legally, as two late hits on full back Kieron Davies at the start of the second half effectively ended his participation. The set scrum was Legends most effective weapon but that alone does not win games and there can be no complaints that the Watford side were deserved winners.

Letchworth had started well and Jai Johal landed an early penalty. However Fullers struck from a blindside move at a scrum when the Letchworth defender slipped and missed his man. The Fullers out half had certainly brought his boots for the occasion and added the points. Letchworth replied straight from the restart with another Johal penalty with what were to be their last points of the afternoon. Further Fullers penalties, including one when Tommy Robinson saved a certain score but received a yellow card for his pains, saw the Watford side leading 16/6 at the break. Despite still being in the mix at half time there was a feeling amongst the travelling faithful that this would not be Legends day.

This was made fact in the second half as the home side dominated.  A great try saving tackle by flanker Lewis Jones then saw the controversial late hit on Davies that went unpunished. Minutes later the Letchworth full back was clearly taken out in the air and again the referee took no action, but Davies game was at an end with a shoulder injury.  However whilst Fullers were putting some really good passages of play together Letchworth were patchy with the ball in hand and seemed unable to create any space to penetrate. The result was two well worked and converted tries for the home side and thin gruel for the visitors who need to address certain areas before the visit of high flying Chiswick next Saturday.

There will be far more than thin gruel on offer at Legends Lane next week with a league lunch before the match. All diners to contact BRIAN B on 07768 274037 to book their place.
