Letchworth Garden City RFC

43 - 6

(HT 0-0)

Welwyn RFC

Whilst there was plenty of charity displayed at the former players lunch before this game where over £1000 was raised for the Lister Hospital prostate cancer unit there was little to spare on the field for the county's junior Garden City.  Indeed Welwyn were a shadow of the side who had dominated Legends earlier in the season but also there was far more confidence and good technique displayed by Dave Hynard’s men which should stand them in good stead for the last five games of the season, all of which should be eminently winnable.

Despite the strong wind it was fresh and bright at Legends Lane as a galaxy of old faces turned up to cheer on the present crop of players.  They were not disappointed as the home side registered their biggest league win for three seasons.  Within a few minutes a kick ahead was chased down by flying winger Julian Kitson who plunged over with Jai Johal adding the conversion.

Welwyn then enjoyed their one sustained period of dominance and with two penalties had brought the score back to 7/6.  However this was to be the last time they actually troubled the score board.  A fine break by centre Arun Johal saw scrum half Chris Gibbs on his shoulder and Legend’s man of the match went over for a fine try.  It was then the forwards turn to pound the visitor’s line. Burly skipper Sean Flatman and Jon Brain led several charges before Gibbs put returning number eight Luke Mongston through for a good score. The bonus point was gained before half time and again it was that man Gibbs who was at the end of a move to make things 26/6 at half time.

Letchworth now had the wind at their backs and another weighted chip saw Kitson go over for another try.  Then with Welwyn playing catch up the ball was intercepted by flanker Will Stacey who stormed sixty metres up the field to dot down Letchworth’s sixth try.  Winger Gurure also tried to get in on the scoring spree but was brought down just close to the line.  It was fitting that the last try was created by Gibbs with a fine dummy.  His pass then saw talented centre Daffyd Lloyd through for the final score.  Welwyn then lost  a player to the sin bin but held out to the death as Letchworth tried to make it a fifty pointer.

This win should put the team in good heart for their away game to Grasshoppers and it was a convivial evening at Legends Lane as both the seconds and thirds won convincingly.  All round a great day for the club and while it was tough on Welwyn there was great sportsmanship between the two sides after the game.
