Saffron Walden RFC

18 - 32

(HT 10-23)

Letchworth Garden City RFC

In a side showing more than eight changes from last week’s league match Legends swept their Essex neighbours before them in a copycat version of last year’s cup match.  It was gratifying to see the return of two old heads in fullback Kieron Davies and boxing legend Tom Ansell at fly half but the plaudits belong to one of the youngest members of the team Aman Johal who showed great poise and confidence in scoring a hat-trick of tries and though still a schoolboy at Hitchin Boys is obviously one to watch for the future.  This should be no surprise as his Dad played for both Worcester and Moseley before ending his playing days as captain of Letchworth and then five years successfully coaching with Jimmy Tirrell at Legends Lan. Jaggy Johal is now one of Dave Hynard’s coaching panel and no doubt the head coach was well impressed with his dominant pack and slick backs after last week’s disappointing display.

Letchworth led from the off as a great garry owen from Chris Gibbs - who is getting back to pre-injury form - was chased by flying winger Julian Kitson and Johal made the touch down converted by Davies.

Saffron Walden hit back with a quick penalty for a seven pointer before Davies extended the lead with a well struck penalty.

As the Saffron Walden openside was carded flying winger Jack Anthony scored in the corner then a great interchange between Davies and Tom Ansell saw Johal go over for his second to make it 7/22 at half time.

The second half saw more Letchworth domination from an aggressive pack and though Saffron Walden pulled back three with a penalty another high kick was well chased down by Johal to score his hat trick. Saffron Walden scored from another kick but Letchworth were out of sight when another of Legends young prospects Aaron Williams, whose dad Nigel graced the wing for Wasps twenty years ago, crossed for Legends fifth try. Tom Ansell received ten minutes on the naughty step and despite one great try saving tackle from Aaron Williams  the home side scored in the last minute but the match was never in doubt.

So an encouraging result to re-start the league campaign next week with a tough visit to Hammersmith and Fulham for Dave Hynard and his charges.
