Old Priorians RFC

40 - 14

(HT 17-7)

Letchworth Garden City RFC

It was a bloody nose on the road for the opening match of the season for the Legends on Saturday in West London.  Priorians who had been relegated from London one last year were a polished outfit who played a great fast flowing game catching the North Herts side off their guard.  Some of the play was a joy to watch … unless you were at Letchworth supporter!!

The main area of Letchworth superiority was in the set piece scrummage and this was not really a day for that although they did dominate and consistent scrum penalties in the last 10 minutes in the first half resulted in an opening try for number eight Joe Allison converted by Dan Duke.  By that time they were chasing the game which had seen an opening penalty well struck by the Priorians number 10 who had a great afternoon with the boot.  The home side number eight, who was man of the match, constantly offloaded and twice Letchworth’s defence was breached out wide.

At 17 - 7 at half time there was always a chance of a comeback however this was snuffed out early in the second-half when the home side scored a pushover try themselves, and a further penalty made it 27 - 7 after 50 minutes.

A further penalty and two unconverted tries and it looked like the floodgates could open, but some bursts of skill by Michael Waters and Chris Gibbs and grit amongst the rest of the side saw them in Priorians half for the last eight minutes, and they were rewarded with a final consolation try in the last minute converted by Dan Duke.

So plenty for Baz Basra and his coaching team to work on this week before next week’s opening home game to local rivals Datchworth, but there is no doubt on this performance the Greenford side will be near the top if not top of the pile come next April.

Next week’s game will kick off at 3pm at Legends Lane.  There is a lunch beforehand at 1pm … all diners please book with Brian BURKE on 07768 274037.
