As we bring another thrilling season to a close, it’s time to reflect on the tremendous efforts, remarkable achievements, and resilient spirit of our Letchworth Rugby Club teams. This season has been nothing short of spectacular, from our senior squads to our vibrant youth section.

Men’s 1st XV: Battling through a tough league

Following the Men's 1st XV consecutive league promotion last season, they fought valiantly, showcasing their tenacity and skill in a challenging league. Despite some tough losses, including a close draw in the last match of the season against Westcliff where the final score was 38-38 due to a penalty try awarded in the game's last minutes, the team consistently displayed their competitive edge.

The standout moment came when Big Baz made a memorable impact, underscoring the collective effort that saw the 1st XV secure a very respectable 4th place finish. Their determination on the field has set a high standard for the coming season, and we are incredibly proud of their performance.

Men’s 2nd XV: League champions and cup contenders

Our Men’s 2nd XV have been nothing short of legendary this season. Dominating their league with an undefeated run, they clinched the league title in style. Their journey was punctuated by impressive victories, including a crucial 36-26 win against Harpenden 2nd XV and a hard-fought away win against Ampthill, sealing a 21-34 triumph.

Despite a narrow loss in the Merit Premier Cup final against Bishops Stortford Mitres with a score of 22-14, their only defeat this year, the 2nd XV have demonstrated remarkable consistency and resilience. Their league victory is a testament to their hard work and dedication. As we look ahead, the entire club is excited about what this talented squad will bring next season.

Lionesses: Rising stars of women's rugby

Our women’s Lionesses have continued to impress, finishing 4th in their league and showing immense growth and potential. The season was a rollercoaster of emotions, from the high of some well-deserved victories, making the local news and first tries for multiple players to the unfortunate cancellations towards the end of the season that highlighted the unpredictability of the sport.

The launch of the Lionesses Rugby Academy in January has also been a major highlight, providing a nurturing environment for girls from Year 3 to Year 13 to develop their rugby skills. With dedicated training sessions and a focus on fostering a love for the game, the Academy has been a resounding success, further strengthening the future of women's rugby at Letchworth.

U16s triumph in the Youth Cup Finals

Our U16s team has given us plenty of reasons to celebrate this season. Their incredible journey culminated in a dominant 39-5 victory against Hertford in the Youth Cup semi-finals, propelling them into the finals where they continued their winning streak against Harpenden B team. The young squad's dedication and hard work paid off, and they have set a fantastic example for our younger players to aspire to.

We also want to celebrate the amazing effort and progress made by our Minis and Juniors teams overall. Their dedication and enthusiasm have been evident throughout the season, laying a strong foundation for the future of our club.

Braveherts: Where everyone finds their place on the pitch

The Braveherts team has shown remarkable growth and spirit this season, welcoming a number of new faces. This mixed ability team has truly embodied our club's ethos that rugby is for everyone, regardless of age, gender, ability, or background. Welcoming men, women, and children who are eager to join in on the fun and inviting those facing a range of challenges, Braveherts has built a strong, supportive community through mixed ability touch rugby sessions.

Looking ahead to the club expansion and future prospects

As we reflect on the season's highs and lows, it's also important to look forward. The upcoming summer marks the completion of our much-anticipated club extension, featuring a new viewing gallery and lounge. This development is set to enhance our facilities, providing players and supporters alike with an even better experience. The new space will be a hub of activity and excitement, especially as we plan a series of events to celebrate our centenary year.

The success of our teams this season lays a strong foundation for the future. We are already planning for the next season, with pre-season training kicking off soon and a host of exciting activities on the horizon. Our summer programme includes dedicated women's rugby fitness sessions, Love Rugby camps designed to inspire and support girls' rugby, and a range of events to keep the rugby spirit alive during the off-season.

In conclusion, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our players, coaches, volunteers, and supporters who have contributed to a memorable season. The camaraderie, determination, and passion that define Letchworth Rugby Club have been evident throughout, and we are excited to carry this momentum into the future. Here’s to another fantastic season ahead – Go Legends!

PRESIDENT'S PRATTLE!

I would just like to congratulate all the members on another successful year  It is a joint effort between players coaches committee, staff and non playing members and VPs as Debbie has already pointed out. Our great team of Sponsors have also been more than generous this year with help on the new Extension. This is especially welcome in these tough economic times. We thank you all for your continued support.

I would like to congratulate our chairman Chris Lunnon in bringing this project to such a successful conclusion and his right hand man over the past nine months Gary Ryall. We should also boast brand new floodlights on the first team pitch if all goes to plan in the next few months! Also I think everyone will agree that our website and social media and communication has improved mightily this year thanks to Debbie’s efforts.

Despite all the bad press that rugby has and is receiving the spirit within the club is immense and over the year we have also found time and effort to support the local Hospice to the tune of £20,000 in November as well as continued donations to MND, Male Prostate Cancer and Mc Millans Nurses. The raffle and auction at the club ball also raised £1,000 for the family of the Wisbech player who unfortunately collapsed and died in a game last September.

As our beloved club progresses in its hundredth year we should embrace the future but let us not forget rugby’s core ethos and traditions that make it the greatest and most sociable team game in the world. The opening of the new extension will be on Saturday 17th August from one o clock onwards. Full details to follow but be sure to wear black and amber for the big centenary photo!
