James “Jimmy“ Tirrell who captained and coached Letchworth over six seasons, which included two Herts County Cup wins, has been given a prestigious role with the England under 20 Six Nations squad. Tirrell, who with his brothers began his rugby life at Legends Lane before joining the England 7s set up over a decade ago as a player, has now returned to the international scene in an exciting coaching role.
Bad knee injuries caused an early end to his international career but he returned to his home club and with a talented squad, including Glyn Hughes (London Welsh) and Henry Robinson (Rosslyn Park), Letchworth enjoyed some great seasons under his care.
Since moving to Saracens as RDO over the past three years Tirrell has enhanced his reputation as a backs coach and this new posting is in recognition of this. Tirrell will assist head coach Alan Dickens as backs and attack coach and the latter said “I have known James for the past few years and he is developing into a fine young coach. He has a brilliant attitude and that enthusiasm rubs off on the players“.
Jimmy said “This is an incredible opportunity for me to work with some really talented players and prepare them for the six nations. I am keen to learn and improve as a coach and to be in the England environment means there will be exciting times ahead“.
Meanwhile his old pals at Legends Lane will raise a glass or two in his honour to wish one of their best loved sons every success in the season ahead.
