Over 500 like minded rugby souls descended on Letchworth Rugby Club on Saturday 31st July to pay tribute to Graham Walker who passed away in January this year after a long fight with cancer.

The day was put together by widow Jo, best pal Paul Hughes and members of the 25 club founded by Graham and the club committee.  The crowd were treated to two highly entertaining games.  In the first the Letchworth veterans narrowly overcame their Bishop Stortford counterparts, ably refereed by Stevenage President Steve Gibbs.  There was then a break for some emotional speeches and memories of Graham from Jo, Mark Elliott of Welwyn and club President Brian Burke.  The afternoon game featured a multi talented Graham Walker XV all wearing the number six on their shirts (Graham played as a blindside flanker).  Their opponents from the Herts County development squad proved stiff opposition.  The game ebbed and flowed with a narrow win for Walker’s fifteen by five points.  Again referee Jack Sutton provided a flowing game for the large crowd.  The Lions match followed with a great live band to finish off the proceedings.

There is no doubt that this was one of the most busy if not busiest days bar and food wise at the club, and all workers and volunteers are to be commended for the way the day went.  It went well with funds to be divided between club, 25 club and local charity once the dust has settled.

Pictured are the Letchworth veterans who played against Bishop Stortford veterans on Saturday at Legends Lane … at least six ex-skippers and over 1000 combined years between them!
