Baz Basra has chosen abrasive second row John Brain as his playing Captain for this season.  John took the role in a number of games last season and did enough to persuade his coach he is the man for the job.

As a youngster, John enjoyed his rugby at Royston. Feeling the need to step up a couple of leagues he looked at Shelford, but followed in his father David’s footsteps, joining Letchworth.  David enjoyed great seasons at Legends Lane before getting picked up by Saracens. His claim to fame was taking Martin Johnston to the cleaners as unfancied Saracens beat the high flying Leicester team, littered with Internationals and British Lions.

John has his feet on the ground, recognising the importance of his role.  “The club have declared an ambition to challenge for promotion within two seasons. My on field job is to motivate and keep us playing to the game plan. Off field is to bond the team to a band of brothers. I believe we have the talent to challenge for and meet that ambition. It starts with hard yards now”.

Training, within RFU guidelines, started this Thursday with in excess of 50 players reporting to prepare for rugby.  Any new players are welcome to turn up and join in.
