It looks like my remarks yesterday on Graham’s memorial about buses was somewhat ill judged. Again we were all rocked this morning to hear the sad news about Miles Lewis who passed away at Bedford Hospital in the early hours of Saturday morning at the far too young age of 54.

Many of you from la Grange will have known Miles all his life and I certainly did for over 40 years and what a fantastic character he was on and off the field ...

He came through our junior and colts sides to play for the firsts for several years till his gammy knee cut short his playing career.  Nonplussed he took up refereeing and coaching in his hugely entertaining and original style.  He was also much respected at Sam Whitbread school where he was the PE and games teacher.  Whilst married to Tracey he had two lovely children Freya and Harry who are now growing into fine young adults.

A passionate Letchworth Welshman he was always to the fore when there was a clash with the old enemy being shown at the club.  And just as he was a hard tackling crash centre on the field so off it he was brilliantly funny and entertaining and a founder of the Porto Tinto club with his great friend Steve ‘Bruv’ Morley.  This club met on a Saturday night and I was privileged to be a guest on several occasions ... I am happy to add that I remember nothing about it after the first half hour.  Moreover Mr Lunnon could tell you what he did to his smart car after one of the meetings ... if he could only remember!  Rugby was much more fun in those crazy days! ...

Miles stayed involved with the club on the coaching side bringing through another generation of Legends and though he had some demons was happily married to Yo for whom we offer our deepest condolences, as we do to Harry and Freya, Lewie and all his family.

As Richie Davies said to me this morning ... the heavenly waiting room could be getting pretty rowdy at this stage!

Again we shall celebrate his life fully when these hard times are over.

Now can someone please go and burn that bloody bus depot down!

With all best wishes
El Prez
