Letchworth came out well on top in this friendly with their Garden City rivals at Legends Lane on Saturday.  Both sides played good open rugby and the absence of scrums and mauls (due to Covid rules) meant there was plenty of it, and plenty of tired bodies by the end.

Head coach Baz Basra was pleased with his young charges though there is still plenty to do and Shelford away next week will be quite a challenge before the break till July’s pre-season.  “We worked the ball wide well and there were some full on performances out there today” said the ex-Bedford and Northampton Saints prop.  “It is still early days and there will be plenty to work at especially set pieces and breakdown“.

Once again the Waters and Johal brothers were to the fore with Chris Gibbs sparkling at scrum half and young Kayne Chan-Kitchener also impressing.  Winger Tattinda Gurure also showed his pace.  Up front Joe Allison had another fine outing with Liam Fitts showing great determination and leadership.   Young Mason Wiegand at only eighteen is a great prospect for the future and ex-skipper Sam Moat won some great lineout ball.  Dave Hatch continues to attempt to run through the toughest of defences.

Letchworth were 21/0 up and 44/7 at the second break.  It is much to Welwyn’s credit that their heads never dropped and they ran in several scores to make the end result far more respectable.  Meanwhile the phalanx of Letchworth’s coaches can be well satisfied the way the squad is developing for next season.
