Isabelle, awarded Most Improved Player of the Year for the 2023-2024 season with Coach Martin and 2023/24 Minis Chair, Danny Ryall

Rugby is more than just a sport; it can be a transformative experience that builds self-confidence, fosters friendships, promotes fitness, and empowers individuals. At Letchworth Rugby Club, we are dedicated to promoting these benefits and encouraging girls and women to join our community, whether through pre-season fitness sessions or rugby skills and training.

Building self-confidence

One of the most impactful benefits of playing rugby is the boost in self-confidence it provides. A study by Women in Sport found that 93% of women who play sport believe it has a positive impact on their self-confidence. Rugby, with its physical demands and team-oriented nature, teaches players to trust their abilities, make quick decisions, and overcome challenges on the field. These skills translate to everyday life, helping women and girls tackle personal and professional obstacles with newfound confidence.

One of our budding Letchworth rugby girls, Isabelle, and her journey at Letchworth is a testament to this transformation. "When Isabelle joined LGC RFC, she was a small, quiet girl and very apprehensive about playing rugby. At the start, she didn't want to leave her parents' side, but gradually, she came out of her shell. We managed to recruit Dan Weekes (Dad) to the coaching team and as the weeks went by, Isabelle's confidence grew, both on and off the ball. Isabelle has turned into a fantastic player; she will happily lead the line, calling out to the other players to make sure the team are in the correct positions. When she gets the ball, she is a whippet; there's no stopping her. Going forward, she is fantastic at beating players and scoring tries. Her off-loading to her teammates when tagged is brilliant to see. She is always the first one back in the defensive line, leading by example. Overall, a brilliant asset to our team, and very much deserved 'Most Improved Player of the Year' for the 2023-2024 season." Martin, Isabelle's coach

Fostering friendships

Rugby is renowned for its camaraderie and sense of community. The bonds formed on the pitch extend far beyond the game, creating lasting friendships. Research from the University of Birmingham highlights that participation in team sports like rugby significantly improves social integration and mental health. At Letchworth, our players support each other both on and off the field, creating a fun, friendly, warm and welcoming environment where everyone feels valued and included.

Promoting fitness

Rugby is a full-body workout that improves cardiovascular health, strength, agility, and endurance. The physical benefits of playing rugby are well-documented and regular participation in rugby can enhance aerobic fitness, muscular strength, and body composition. Our sessions at Letchworth are designed to cater to all fitness levels, ensuring that everyone, from beginners to seasoned players, can enjoy the health benefits of the sport.

Empowerment through rugby

Rugby empowers women and girls by breaking down traditional gender barriers and promoting equality. The visibility and success of teams like England’s Red Roses, currently the number one ranked side in the world, inspire the next generation to pursue their rugby dreams. A report by the Rugby Football Union (RFU) revealed that women who play rugby feel more empowered and capable in their everyday lives, demonstrating the sport's profound impact on personal development.

Academic and career benefits

The discipline and teamwork skills developed through rugby can also positively impact academic and career success. A study by Ernst & Young and espnW found that 94% of women in a company's top management positions played sports, with rugby players often highlighting their ability to handle pressure and work collaboratively as key advantages in their professional lives. Encouraging girls to play rugby from a young age can therefore set them on a path toward success in multiple areas of their lives.

Mental health benefits

Playing rugby also offers significant mental health benefits. Engaging in regular physical activity releases endorphins, which can alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression. A survey conducted by Active Lives revealed that 74% of participants reported improved mental well-being through sports participation. At Letchworth, we prioritise creating a supportive environment where players can enjoy the mental health benefits of rugby while building resilience and emotional strength.

Encouraging girls and women to join us

At Letchworth Rugby Club, we offer a range of opportunities to get involved tailored to different age groups and skill levels. Our pre-season fitness sessions held at 7.30pm to 8.30pm on Wednesdays throughout the summer months, are open to women and girls from school year 3 upwards. These sessions focus on fitness, conditioning, skills, and drills, providing a fun and inclusive introduction to rugby. We also have our dedicated girls rugby skills training sessions for school year 3 to 13 that take place every Thursday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. These sessions are designed to develop technical skills, an understanding of rugby, and teamwork.

We understand that trying a new sport can be daunting, especially for young girls who may feel shy or uncertain. That’s why our Wednesday sessions are a perfect starting point for both Mums and daughters to attend. They offer a relaxed and supportive environment where participants can build their confidence before girls join us for the more focused Thursday training sessions. Women who enjoy our pre-season fitness training over Summer are encouraged to stick around in September when rugby season begins and rugby skills and drills, as well as gameplay, become our main focus.
