The new season is officially underway at Letchworth Rugby Club, with the senior squad returning to training this week as preparations begin for another campaign at Level 5. After narrowly missing out on promotion to National 2 in last season’s play-offs, there is plenty of optimism and determination as the players look ahead to the challenges of the new season.

While the squad were being put through their paces in the evening sunshine, a special presentation was taking place inside the clubhouse.

Club President Brian Burke was delighted to present a cheque for £2,500 to Dr Sally Burton, Deputy Vice Lieutenant of Hertfordshire and representative of Breast Cancer Now.

The donation was raised during the club’s final home league game of last season, when the annual Ladies Day fundraiser brought members, supporters and guests together for an afternoon of rugby, entertainment and fundraising. Highlights included the auction of the players’ special pink match shirts, raffles throughout the day and the ever-popular auction where 1st XV players were ‘raffled off’ to spend an hour after the match looking after their successful bidders, creating plenty of laughter and memorable moments.

Accepting the donation, Dr Burton thanked everyone at Letchworth Rugby Club for their generosity, fundraising efforts and the warm hospitality she received before the club’s AGM which followed later that evening.

It was a fitting way to begin a new season, demonstrating that while success on the pitch is always the aim, giving back to the community remains at the very heart of Letchworth Rugby Club.
